Four Stages
Here is a good representation of how Jesus led people. It is great tool for developing
apprentices, discipling new believers, and for assessing the life-stage of a D-group or House Church.
Directive This is the “I’ll do, you watch” stage. Jesus said “come, follow me” (Matthew 4:19). During the first stage of developing new leaders a leader must be very clear and directive.
Coaching This is the “Let’s do together” stage. Jesus said “take my yoke upon you and learn from me” (Matthew 11:29). During this phase the leader comes alongside the apprentice to work together.
Pastoral This is the “I’ll watch, you do” stage. “I no longer call you servants, I call you friends” (John 15:15). In this phase the leader is more of a shepherd, guiding the apprentice as they make decisions and take the lead.
Delegation This is the “you go” stage. “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19-22). This is the sending phase where the new leader is released to lead their own group. This is the point of multiplication in the life cycle of a group.
